Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy« Back

Children are encouraged to develop their experience of numbers, pattern, shapes and measurement through play and structured contexts. Their understanding develops as they talk through what they are doing. Activities that develop mathematical thinking include jigsaws, playdough, threading and lacing, sand, water, cookery, role and imaginative play, the track area and construction. Children use numbers in play and learn to recognize and use them later to develop their mathematical ideas and solve problems including addition and subtraction.
